A LOFTY DEBATE REGARDING THE SCREAMO AND NU-METAL GENRES
I probably don’t even have to tell you guys this because he’s already been featured in The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The New Yorker, The New Criterion, on Charlie Rose, and via a plethora of other cultural publications and shows which I know all MetalSucks readers hold near and dear to their hearts. But just in case you’ve been living under a rock: renowned cultural critic Santos Avila, a.k.a. ReadyTwoFightBack, lives in “a cool RV… well, actually, it’s not the best RV,” and makes YouTube videos in which he methodically dissects modern art’s most important and heady works, including how the Nickelodeon channel has been doing subpar work as of late, Saw 7, and even fashion for heterosexual men (“please do not wear your sweater zipper halfway closed… this looks like something a gay person would do”).
But his latest video, which our pal Jesper sent to us over the weekend, may be his most relevant yet. In it, he discusses why all screamo (save for four bands) is terrible, while espousing the merits of nu-metal (“The name of the genre is kind of spelled wrong”) acts like Methods of Mayhem, Crazy Town, Dope, and Anthrax and Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noize.” Make sure you watch this carefully; Avila gives viewers a lot to think about, and I suspect this will cause no shortage of lively debate in our comments section. Bonus: there’s even MORE fashion advice for heterosexual men! So get your scones and tea and enjoy Avila’s insights into the music we love!
