STRIDENT LUCIDITY
Some cranky readers didn’t like the political tone of last week’s SGOTW. These crybabies probably need to have the crusts cut off their peanut butter sandwiches. So this week I’m going to SUPPORT OUR TROOPS and just get on with your noise news.
No Condolences For Young Widows
Louisville’s noise rock rising stars Young Widows are about to embark on an American/Canadian tour in support of their brilliant new album Old Wounds (My review here). Openers vary depending on the region/date, but include Metz, Tombs, Gods And Queens, and Suicide Note. Neato! Additionally, some of the dates are appearances at these festivals: Halifax Pop Explosion (Nova Scotia), Gainesville, FL’s redonkulous The Fest 7, and Austin’s out-of-this-world Fun Fun Fun Fest.
Spill The Wino, Dig That Girl
Speaking of Kentucky noise rock, Temporary Residence announced that it will bring back in-print the entire recorded works of Louisville’s Wino as a double disc package. Digitally remastered because that’s how shit gets done these days, A Bottle Of Pills With A Bullet Chaser will include their only full-length album, all the group’s singles and EPs, and plenty of previously unreleased nuggets! Freakin’ everything, maaaan! Wino, not to be confused with that dude from Saint Vitus or the crack-smoking/black culture appropriating Amy Winehouse, was an influential part of the Louisville hardcore scene. I bet you didn’t even know there was a Louisville hardcore scene, you elitist fuck. Redeem yourself by listening to “Dutch Oven” and “Edward.”
Today Is The Day To Watch Today Is The Day On Your iPod
After years of browbeating listeners with devastating albums on Amphetamine Reptile and Relapse, Today Is The Day demigod Steve Austin now runs his own label, SuperNova Records. Fans of his blistering metallic noise rock can now buy two full length concert videos – in digital download formats – direct from that imprint. Live In Japan captures a 2002 performance, while Live at the Whiskey A Go-Go comes from a 1998 gig in support of the satanic Temple Of The Morningstar. Each costs a mere eight bucks apiece, and is available in multiple digital formats, depending on your player. Come November, Today Is The Day will take their brutal show on the road along with sinister stoners Weedeater. The tour’s New York gig – also featuring MetalSucks faves Made Out Of Babies – is at Knitting Factory on November 5, but tickets are not available yet.
Waiting For Limited Senility
The Hydra Head Records blog reports that the super special, super limited “collectors edition” of the Melvins’ A Senile Animal 4xLP reissue is almost ready to go on sale. The sets, which include a belt buckle and comic book, are still being assembled, but go to that link at the Hydra Head blog to reserve your copy. And if you’re just buying one to flip it on Ebay, seriously go fuck yourself in the ass with a live hand grenade.
More Vinyl Unsanity
In other vinyl reissue news, Southern Records imprint Black Diamond recently put out a limited-to-800-copies wax edition of last year’s in-fudging-credible Unsane album Visqueen. What color vinyl, you ask? Red. Blood red. What else would you expect from Unsane?! Frustratingly, I have no other news about the band, and I’m deeply dismayed about that.
Old Farts Make New Noise
Cold Spring has just released a collaborative record from Boyd Rice (a.k.a. NON) and Z’EV, the latter of whom you might recall from his somewhat recent work with Sunn O))) monk Stephen O’Malley. This record features two lengthy unnamed tracks of trance-inducing dark drone, and will surely delight the Southern Lord fetishists as well as fans of these two artists’ long careers in unconventional music. A documentary on the misanthropic Mr. Rice entitled Iconoclast is in the works, with an online trailer for your current viewing pleasure. Rice will also be doing some special release events this month for his Standing In Two Circles book in Hollywood and Philadelphia. Details are available at his website.
Until next time: eviscerate the proletariat.
