BEN WEINMAN WORKING ON NEW PROJECT WITH MIKE PATTON, TOO?

I guess Ben Weinman likes to keep busy. He The Dillinger Escape Plan’s guitairst, primary songwriter, and manager, and he’s got this new supergroup with Mastodon’s Brent Hinds, The Mars Volta’s Thomas Pridgen, and former Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery brewing, and now, according to the above video interview, he’s also working on something with Mike Patton.

That particular nugget of info comes at the 2:14 mark, but in case you’re technologically challenged and can’t figure out how to get to said 2:14 mark, here’s a transcript of what Weinman says when asked if he’ll ever work with Patton again:

“I don’t think as Dillinger, as a band [we’ll work with Patton again], but I’m probably going to be doing some project with him. I’m actually working on something right now. It’s in the works, there’s some things in the works… It’s not a secret, it’s just kind of in the early stages of… we don’t know exactly what it’s would it to be. So it’s very early stages of development.”

I’m a huge admirer of Irony is a Dead Scene, the EP that Dillinger recorded with Patton while they were in-between former vocalist Dimitri Minakakis and current vocalist Greg Puciato; Rob from Metal Injection once said that Irony really set the tone for Puciato-era DEP, and I think that’s an accurate assessment. So the idea of Weinman and Patton joining forces once again is great news, as far as I’m concerned.

Of course, Weinman says it’s in the early stages, so we have no idea when any music will actually emerge — and there’s always the sad, scary possibility that the project will never come to fruition at all. But for now, at least, let’s all keep our fingers crossed and allow ourselves to get at least a little excited.
