PROG METAL QUADRUPLE-SHOT: NEW MUSIC FROM HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE, ELECTRO QUARTERSTAFF, ORWELL AND CORELIA
Today is a good day to be a fan of the progressive. Let’s get right down to it…
It’s not difficult to hear that Ludicra and Hammers of Misfortune share guitarist John Cobbett; the bands sound very different from one another, but there’s a certain harmonic connection that’s apparent on first listen of Hammers of Misfortune’s new track “The Grain.” And this is a good thing. Just as Ludicra’s stunning 2010 release The Tenant was singular in its Ludicra-ness, Hammers of Misfortune have a sound all their own, a bit more on the progressive, NWOBHM and folk-influenced side than Cobbett’s other band. 17th Street comes out on October 25th via Metal Blade (pre-order here).

Fans of niche Canadian instrumentalists Electro Quarterstaff have been salivating for new music since 2006’s Gretzy and it’s finally almost here; Aykroyd comes out on October 18th via Willowtip Records. If challenging instrumental bands like East of the Wall, Dysrhythmia and Coalesce are your bit, this is going to be right up your alley.

Wisconsin metallers Orwell impressed us with “In Crude, I Remain,” which they released last month. They’ve done it again with a full stream of A View of Heaven From a Seat In Hell, released this week, which you can stream in full at Metal Insider. The album was produced by Steve Henningsgard of MS favorites Iron Thrones. The album is available for whatever you’d like to pay for it via Bandcamp.
Corelia are probably most famous for their vocalist, Ryan Devlin, who is now the touring vocalist for The Human Abstract. One listen to Corelia is all it takes to understand why THA chose this dude; a) he’s a really talented vocalist who reminds me of Circa Survive’s Anthony Green or The Mars Volta’s Cedric Bixler-Zavala, and b) Corelia’s music is just as progged out and zany as THA’s, albeit less classically-inspired.
