The Callous Daoboys Switch Up Their Sound with “Lemon” and It’s Sure to Piss Off Gatekeepers
There’s a lot you could say about The Callous Daoboys. They’re the forefront of a new class of mathcore outfits. They’re unabashedly themselves and you’ll know right away if you like that or not. And they’re not afraid to ruffle some feathers.
When it comes to their forthcoming album I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven and its newest single “Lemon”, that last factoid is defiantly on display.
Now, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it — if you only like your Callous Daoboys to be absolutely batshit insane and playing within a bazillion different time signatures, this song might not be for you. But if you’re willing to let this Atlanta-based sextet take you on a ride no matter where their musical dalliances may lead, then “Lemon” could be the calm harbor amidst a turbulent sea of panic chords and banshee wails. And that’s because this track ditches the madness in service of a genre-bending track that’s danceable and sorta sexy like an R&B hit.
This single drop is stylistically so different from their previous two-part release of “Two-Headed Trout” and “The Demon of Unreality Limping Like a Dog” that it might be hard for some to reconcile that this is the same band. Speaking of the single, vocalist Carson Pace said recognized that this could be a polarizing single for many people.
“Some people are going to love this one, some people are going to hate this one, it’s just the reality of things. ‘Lemon’ represents every frustration that you’ve ever had with a judgmental lover who wants you to give up on your art. ‘Lemon’ says ‘fuck that, you didn’t love me anyway.’”
I Don’t Want To See You In Heaven will be available on May 16 via MNRK Heavy, but you can preorder this one right now.
