F*ck the Grammys: Anciients, Devin Townsend, Kittie, and More Nominated for JUNO Awards
Every year, we metalheads scoff and laugh whenever the Grammys announce their nominees. Every time it happens, their choices for the metal category are met with derision, as they undoubtedly pick the most mainstream, surface level shit when we all know there’s so much better out there. Know who doesn’t let us down? The Canadians. Their version of the Grammys — the JUNO Awards — regularly nails their metal category, nominating and awarding killer bands. I mean, Cryptopsy won last year!
This year’s nominees for the metal category once again feature some bangers:
- Beyond the Reach of the Sun, Anciients
- PowerNerd, Devin Townsend
- Fire, Kittie
- The Fear of Fear, Spiritbox
- Ultrapower, Striker
But one of the more interesting story lines this time around is the fact that this is the second nomination for Anciients. You may recall that they won a JUNO Award for their previous album Voice of the Void, so it’s a pretty big honor for their follow up record Beyond the Reach of the Sun to at least get a nod.
Anciients frontman Kenny Cook reflected on the news, citing how big of an accomplishment this was for the band.
“We are very honored and excited to receive a JUNO nomination for our latest record. Win or lose, we are grateful to be recognized on a national scale and we feel privileged to be nominated alongside the other amazing artists in the Metal category. We wish them all nothing but the best of luck. See you soon in Vancouver!”
The 54th Juno Awards will take place on March 30 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, so we won’t know who takes the trophy home until then. Be sure to check back in with us to see which album won.
