Dave Murray Says “We Will All Know” When It’s Time for Iron Maiden to Hang It Up
As far as legacy acts go in heavy metal, few are more prolific and as long-lasting as the mighty Iron Maiden. Yet with most of their members getting up there in their advanced age, the question about how much they’ve got left in the take has begun bubbling up to the surface. Time stops for no one and with the recent announcement that drummer Nicko McBrain was retiring from his tour duties only cemented one solitary truth — the members of Iron Maiden are getting older and that means they’ll eventually have to call it quits.
Even with that fact looming in the air, Iron Maiden members have remained defiant to the clock, playing sold out arenas all over the world and running as if it doesn’t matter. Yet according to a Music Radar interview featuring guitarist Dave Murray, that nonchalance from within the band stems largely from the belief that when it’s time to call it quits, the band will know.
“To me, there’s nothing worse than seeing a band you like on stage and they look like they shouldn’t really be there doing it. We’re nearly hitting the seventies mark now, but I think we will all know when it would be time. It would be a mutual decision.
“I think there’s a time and a place to bail out with dignity and grace — as opposed to dragging it outs,” he continued. “If you can leave it at that high level, and then bow out gracefully, I think it would be satisfying for us. And not just flog a dead horse, when you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.”
With yet another world tour set to start this May, Iron Maiden show no signs of stopping. While it’s great to see artists ply their craft as long as they can, it also puts a toll on their bodies.
