Mastodon to Discuss ‘Leviathan’ and ‘Moby-Dick’ at Metropolitan Opera Event
Who’s ready for a black-tie mosh pit? It seems like Mastodon are going to be speaking at an event for The Metropolitan Opera at the BRIC in Brooklyn on the influence of Herman Mellville’s 1851 novel Moby-Dick on their 2004 album Leviathan. The talk will be a conversation with composer Jake Hegge to celebrate his 2010 opera about the novel, and will also feature composers Tamar-kali and David T. Little. Writing on the official Instagram for The Metropolitan Opera, the event was described as such:
“Metal? And opera? Groundbreaking.
“Mark your calendars for Friday, February 28, when members of legendary metal band [Mastodon] meet composer [Jake HEgge] at [BRIC] to celebrate the Met premiere of Heggie’s Moby-Dick and the 20th anniversary of Mastodon’s landmark album Leviathan. Join us as the composer and members of the band discuss Herman Melville’s novel as a shared source of inspiration, alongside fellow metalhead composers [Tamar-kali] and [David T. Little].”
That sounds like a really fun event to attend and certainly beats actually trying to read through all those chapters in Moby-Dick that go into detail about whale biology. The event is free, by the way.
