Even Spotify Has Jokes for the Spiritbox/Poppy Interview Botch During the Grammys
During this year’s Grammys, one of the most cringe-inducing moments that could ever happen to an interviewer happened live and in living color, as Spiritbox vocalist Courtney LaPlante was mistaken for another Best Metal Performance nominee, Poppy. We reported on it yesterday and honestly, I still can’t get over the second-hand embarrassment I feel for that interviewer.
Yet leave it to the internet to make light of the situation and have a good time with it at the same time. All over social media, people have been cracking jokes about the mistake and how LaPlante rolled with the mistake, confirming that she was in fact Poppy and that she and Knocked Loose were so excited for the nomination. In fact, she stayed in character for the whole three minute interview, which not only showed that she knew her shit about Poppy, but that she had the grace to save the interviewer from having to pull out of an interview tailspin, as it were.
But if you thought the jokes were going to be relegated to just the terminally online metalheads on social media, you’d be wrong. No, even one of the biggest corporations involved in music had to get its licks in, as Spotify used its Kickass Metal playlist to capitalize on the kerfuffle. As you can see from the image below, they posted LaPlante’s image on the playlist page, but changed the tagline to: “Poppy on top of today’s best Metal playlist.”
Say what you will about Spotify’s business practices or the fact that Spotify CEO Daniel Ek is a bloodsucking tool, but that’s some hilarious shit. Now if only they could stop AI from fucking up artists’ pages as well as they can make jokes, that would be a start…
