Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez Releases Cover of Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York”
Ah yes, there’s nothing metal fans love more than when we have a story with Taylor Swift’s name in the headline. That always gets a positive reaction in the comments section. But this is at least a creative take on the pop diva. Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez debuted the video for his cover of Taylor Swift’s hit track “Welcome to New York.”
The song comes off of Sanchez’s covers EP called Claudio Covers which features covers of The Cure, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Smiths, and more. Whereas Swift’s original version of the song is a dance pop hit, Sanchez slows the song way down to make it a delicate acoustic ballad. The video alternates between Sanchez in the studio recording the song and scenes of the Big Apple that focus on the city’s landscape and multicultural diversity.
Speaking on the single, Sanchez says:
“My decision to include ‘Welcome To New York’ in this covers collection is two-sided. First, in 2014, my son was born in a Brooklyn Hospital (Welcome To NY, Atlas! ????)… and when he became aware of this Swifty classic we listened to it even more so than when it was initially released, and if you know my wife, that’s a lot.
“The other side of my choice is…I love NY. When so many fled the city with uncertainty, my family made the decision to plant deeper roots here. There’s no place in the world like it and no place I’d rather spend my downtime. It’s a place that deserves all its tributes and songs. Maybe one day I’ll have one in me… until then, this will have to do.”
