Jeremy DePoyster of The Devil Wears Prada Doesn’t Think Singles Are Replacing Albums

0

I really am getting tired of everyone who goes around saying “It’s all about singles now instead of full albums.” What the fuck are you talking about? Show me the band that’s focusing solely on singles alone and remaining culturally relevant. Is anyone putting together year-end lists of their favorite singles of the year? It seems like a perception that’s not really based in reality. And it seems at least one person can see through the bullshit, namely The Devil Wears Prada guitarist Jeremy DePoyster.

In a recent interview with Wired in the Empire (that was reported on by our friends at Metal Injection), DePoyster was asked if the band had ever considered releasing singles instead of albums, and DePoyster went off:

“Oh my gosh, yeah. Dude, I’m old school, man. I still like records.”

Then he continued:

“You know what? A couple of years ago, I had a bunch of people telling me the record is dead. It’s all about singles now. It’s all about short form. And then a bunch of my friends in other bands just kept putting out records and we kept putting out records. And I’m, like, I don’t think the suits really know what’s going on. I think the fans and the bands definitely know what’s going on. And I think people just, especially with physical media and putting an LP on and listening to it, there’s just something about just from start to finish, a really well-curated track listing, and that sets the vibe that I don’t think we’ll ever go away from.”

Yeah, he’s right. And, while streaming is on the rise which facilitates the easy release of singles, also remember that vinyl record sales have been on the rise, too, and that’s a format that really lends itself to full albums. So maybe all these bands saying that “records are dead” are listening to the wrong people.
