Scour to Release Gold This Coming February, Phil Anselmo Sounds Crazy Good in “Infusorium”

Time and age can be relentless bastards — especially when it comes to vocalists and their ability to really perform the way they used to. Case and point: Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo. For a long time there, the dude just sounded washed in a live setting but from what we’ve just heard in the new Scour single “Infusorium,” I think we now know the Fountain of Youth was in the Louisiana bayous this whole time.

That might sound a little hyperbolic (and it is), but Anselmo’s voice in this new single from the extreme metal supergroup is fuckin’ fire, man. Tapping the vein of blackened death metal, the song is the world’s first glimpse into Scour’s forthcoming album Gold. Set for release on February 21, 2025 via Housecore Records in North America and Nuclear Blast in Europe, it will be their first full-length offering and the first new release since 2020’s Black EP.

Just so we all know what we’re dealing with, Scour is comprised of Anselmo, Derek Engemann (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals), John Jarvis (Nest, Agoraphobic Nosebleed), Mark Kloeppel (Misery Index), and Adam Jarvis (Pig Destroyer, Misery Index, Lock Up). It’s a veritable who’s-who of badasses capable of pummeling your head in with wicked blast beats and unrelenting attack from all sides.

Speaking of the band’s return to the fore after a few years away, Engemann said fans should expect something truly unexpected from the group in the coming months.

“SCOUR is storming back onto the scene with our new single, ‘Infusorium,’ a relentless blend of intricate guitar work and raw, unforgiving intensity. This track raises the bar, with more intricate guitar work, and featuring a searing solo by Mark Kloeppel, undoubtedly some of his finest work that cuts straight to the core.

“Inspired by Jon Padgett’s haunting short novel, Infusorium, the lyrics channel the story’s eerie depth and darkness, bringing a literary edge to the metal mayhem. As the lead single and first music video from our upcoming full-length album, Gold, ‘Infusorium’ proves the SCOUR is fiercer and more dynamic. The SCOUR boys are back, more ripping than ever!”

Gold will be released on February 21 via Housecore Records/Nuclear Blast, but you can preorder your copy today.
