Tony Campos Suggests Static-X Isn’t Going Anywhere
It’s been a wild run for Static-X over the last couple years. After reuniting in spite of Wayne Static’s passing nearly 10 years ago, the band found new life with frontman Xer0 (totally not Dope’s frontman Edsel Dope, mind you). They’ve since released Project Regeneration Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and have toured extensively. With all that in mind, it sounds like the band might not be going anywhere as long as fans still dig it.
In an interview with Nikki Blakk of San Francisco’s 107.7 The Bone, Static-X bassist Tony Campos discussed what comes next for the band and how fan reactions to what they’re doing play a major part in what they persue.
“That’s what it started as, and it just kept snowballing and growing. And it’s where it is now because fans keep coming out. And I think I’ve said it previously — if I haven’t, I’ll say it now — as long as we’re having fun doing this and the fans keep wanting us to do it, we’ll do it.”
Considering the fact that most people that remember Static-X when it was new are probably in their 40s (at least), Campos was asked if the shows have been nothing but oldheads or if they’ve attracted any younger fans. According to Campos, the band’s managed to net a younger crowd in addition to bringing back old fans into the fold.
“We’ve noticed a lot of younger people. The fans that grew up with us back in ’99 and early 2000s, they’re all adults and have kids, and they’re bringing their kids to the shows. And, yeah, it’s great to see that, a new generation of evil disco heads getting a little fix.”
As for whether we’ll hear completely new music from the band featuring Xero, Campos, guitarist Koichi Fukuda and drummer Ken Jay, that was a much larger uncertainty. The main issue, he said, was the current landscape of the music industry.
“I don’t know if we’ll be doing full-length albums. Who buys albums now? [Laughs] I think maybe if we do write any new music, maybe it’ll be a single. But I don’t know. I’m just living in the now and enjoying the now. And when the future comes, I’ll cross that bridge and we’ll deal with it.”
