Howard Jones, Matt Heafy, and More Tapped for Cult of the Lamb Metal Soundtrack

Ritualistic murder, grotesque eldritch deities, and adorable woodland creatures that willfully commit horrific acts decreed by an undead cult leader. While that may sound like a fun Tuesday evening in the MetalSucks compound, that’s actually just some of what you can find in the smash hit rogue-like game developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, Cult of the Lamb.

Earlier this morning, the folks behind the game announced that they’ve upped the game’s metal cred by announcing a six-track special “re-imagining” of the game’s soundtrack by recruiting some big names in the metal scene. Cult of the Lamb: Hymns of the Unholy will turn up the distortion and throw the volume up to 11 on some of the tracks River Boy originally composed for the game by including current and former members of some heavy hitting metal acts.

Massive Monster co-founder Jay Armstrong said the idea of making a metal album for the game only made sense.

“We’re huge fans of metal music and know there’s a lot of metalheads in the Cult of the Lamb community too. There’s a natural link between the game’s themes and heavy metal music and, given the recent release of our Unholy Alliance DLC and the Goat character, why not get some G.O.A.T.s from the world of metal to transform River Boy’s iconic melodies into heavy metal slammers? All the artists featured on this release have given 100% commitment to this project, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their support and the backing of their management.”

According to folks behind the collaboration, the album will feature Trivium’s Matt Heafy, along with former Killswitch Engage vocalist Howard Jones, Polyphia guitarists Scott LePage and Clay Gober, Animals as Leaders’ Javier Reyes, Malevolence’s Josh Baines, While She Sleeps’ Sean Long, and former Monuments drummer Mike Malyan.

Speaking of his involvement in the album, Heafy said it was only natural that he’d get involved in the project, given his love of video games.

“Video games have always been an important part of my life, so it’s been amazing to work with the Massive Monster team and turn Cult of the Lamb‘s iconic soundtrack into a metal album. There’s such a natural link between video games, heavy metal and the game’s themes that a collaboration like this just makes sense. I hope fans of the game have as much fun listening to this as I did writing and performing my parts, and I hope the metal community and anyone who might not have played Cult of the Lamb before embraces this as a standalone album and checks out the game!”

The first single from the album, “Cult,” features Jones, LePage, and Malyan. As you can hear in the clip below, it heavily includes bits and pieces from the original soundtrack, but quickly gives way to a more metal attack. Given the other names attached to this project, I’m willing to bet the others are pretty heavy too.

Cult of the Lamb: Hymns of the Unholy will be released on October 28, but you can preorder your copy directly from the Devolver Digital store today.
