Atreyu Release Cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Classic “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”

If you’re a big fan of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1993 hit “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and want to find a way to replicate the energy that tune gives off, you have a few options. One option is to rewrite the song with new lyrics and name it something ridiculous like “Dani California,” or you can take the much simpler route of just covering the damn song. Atreyu, thankfully, are taking the latter route.

The cover of Petty’s classic comes from Atreyu’s upcoming release The Pronoia Sessions, a collection of “revised and reimagined” versions of classic Atreyu songs alongside two covers. The first cover, which was of the Audioslave track “Like a Stone,” came out in July alongside the announcement of the collection. Here’s how they described the collection upon announcing it on Instagram:

“This is a career spanning collection of reimagined favorites, as well as two cover songs that we hold dear to our hearts.”

In addition to the two cover songs, Atreyu hav also released reimagined versions of “Becoming the Bull,” which first appeared on the band 2007 album Lead Sails Paper Anchor, and “Gone,” which is taken from their latest studio album The Beautiful Dark of Life.

The Atreyu cover of the Tom Petty classic works surprisingly well as it manages to keep the bluesy vibe of the original while simultaneously giving it a darker, more Atreyu-style sound. Still, it’s a bit of a slower track from the metalcore giants, which is a welcome change of pace. You can hear Atreyu’s take on the Petty hit below.
