Halestorm Announces Upcoming Cover of Brooks & Dunn Classic “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”

Yep, you read that headline correctly. Halestorm has apparently recorded a cover (of sorts) of the song “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” by legendary country music duo Brooks & Dunn for their upcoming album Reboot II.

Technically, Brooks & Dunn weren’t the first ones to record the song, as Ronnie Dunn of Brooks & Dunn originally wrote the track for western swing band Asleep at the Wheel for their 1990 album Keepin’ Me Up Nights. But a year later, Dunn took the song back and re-recorded it with his own duo, creating a big country hit out of a song that Asleep at the Wheel hadn’t even thought to release as a single.

Lzzy Hale posted on Instagram yesterday announcing the new cover and giving the full story of how the track came to be:

“Months ago, we opened an email we were never expecting to receive. Brooks and Dunn asking us to create a reimagined version of their legendary song ‘Boot Scootin’ Boogie.’

“This, a request too wild to even consider passing on, more than wet (sic) our appetite for adventure. We asked if there were any rules for this particular project…and when they replied with a resounding ‘NO RULES APPLY,’ the boys and I knew this was gonna get weird.

“We started down the rabbit hole, and late one night began to cook up a concept. What if Lemmy from Motörhead was a member of Led Zeppelin and THEY birthed a song called Boot Scootin’ Boogie, what would that sound like? So, in the basement of our Halestorm HQ, we created a dirty, fast, raw, energy riddled version of this epic classic.

The next day we went to Blackbird Studios in Nashville TN to work with the legendary Dan Huff on the song, and were greeted with the entire Brooks and Dunn posse! We plugged in and performed Boot Scoot for the first time while everyone watched in the control room.

“Last note still ringing, the whole studio erupted with excitement and a good dose of shock. We were relieved that they loved it, that we passed the audition, and that we somehow matched Ronnie Dunns mushroom trip premonitions for this particular project.

“It’s such an honor to have earned the trust of these legends, thank you so much to Kix Brooks, Ronnie Dunn, Dann Huff, Juice and the entire B&D team for putting your faith in us and letting us throw a wild party in the beautiful house you built!”

The cover isn’t available to stream anywhere yet, but that story certainly wets (sic) our appetite, too. I’m highly curious to hear what a Lemmy-fronted-Zeppelin would do with a Brooks & Dunn song, but I guess we’ll have to wait a little while to find out. The first Reboot album wasn’t a covers album, though, but rather a collection of re-recorded songs that the country duo performed with guest musicians, so presumably Halestorm worked the original artist in there somewhere. We’ll have to wait and see how they did that, too.
