Sh*t That Comes Out Today: August 23, 2024
It’s our favorite day of the week, so let’s get down with the new releases that came out today. What we’ve got below is just a smattering of what’s coming out today, so feel free to let us know in the comments what you’re particularly stoked about, whether it’s on this list or not.
Fleshgod Apocalypse
Opera (Nuclear Blast)
What would you do if you had a near-death experience? Finally write that book? Confess your feelings for someone? After frontman Francesco Paoli nearly died in a rock climbing accident back in 2021, he decided to get his shit together and make a new record. Opera is the result of that plan and as you’ll read in our review later today, it’s a banger.
Föhn
Condescending (Hypaethral Records)
Even though the basis of their sound is deeply-rooted in the realm of funeral doom, Föhn manage to do something unique within that space with their debut album Condescending. It would be a hard task to encapsulate exactly what makes this album unique in a couple of sentences, just know that if you like super heavy, epic avant-garde musical compositions, this is your jam.
Nile
The Underworld Awaits Us All (Napalm Records)
God damn, this record kicks all sorts of ass. The South Carolina brutal/technical death metal outfit Nile are back with their 10th studio album and this one hits hard. Having been around for more than three decades, it’s great to see Nile still pulling out the stops for their latest release.
Spectral Wound
Songs Of Blood And Mire (Profound Lore)
Black metal from the Great White North is on display this week with Spectral Wound’s fourth full-length album, Songs Of Blood And Mire. It’s visceral. It’s unrepentant. It’s black metal sound and fury distilled into seven new tracks just in time for their upcoming run of live dates.
Zeal & Ardor
GREIF (Redacted GmbH)
I really don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said about Manuel Gagneux and his brainchild Zeal & Ardor. Their first three releases are deep and dark, yet bursting at the seams with feeling. Now on their fourth release, the band continue to push the envelope and keep long-time fans guessing with GREIF. Content with being discontented and never willing to stay still musically for too long, this album proves once again that they can change their stripes and you’ll like it.
