Dia De Los Deftones 2024 Lineup Includes IDLES, Gel, and Sunny Day Real Estate
Sometimes, there’s a very thin line between a music festival and just a regular concert with a lot of openers. But that’s okay when the headliner is Deftones. Alt-metal heroes Deftones announced the lineup for this year’s edition of their own mini-festival, Dia De Los Deftones, which will be held in Petco Park in San Diego, California on November 2. It’s got a number of really good and diverse acts this year, and at least one of them comes as a bit of a shock.
One of the big names listed for the festival is British art-punk band Idles, who have been riding high off the recent release of their album Tangk in February. Rising hardcore act Gel will be playing, as well. There’s also Paris Texas, which seems to be referring to the Los Angeles hip-hop duo and not the long-defunct pop-punk band of the same name that I found on a quick Wikipedia search.
But, while a very diverse lineup of different genres is somewhat in keeping Deftones’ overall vibe and their eclectic metal style, one act on the bill stands out as truly surprising: emo legends Sunny Day Real Estate, who only just reunited in 2022. What’s more, SDRE will be playing their debut LP, 1994’s Diary, in its entirety, an album that’s often said to be one of the defining records of emo’s second wave. That’s a very different band from Deftones and it’s a pretty big get for any festival. In fact, it’s probably only because the show is being billed as a festival that they were able to get Sunny Day Real Estate. They’re a bit too big to be a Deftones opener.
