Nikki Sixx is Open to the Possibility of Pulling a KISS and Replacing Mötley Crüe with Avatars

0

As KISS barrel forward with their plans to replace themselves with hologram avatars — a move that’s almost certainly going to prove less successful than planned — another band may be considering following suit: Mötley Crüe.

In a recent interview with Swedish outlet Rockklassiker that was reported on by Metal Injection, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx was asked about KISS’ decision to replace themselves with avatar versions of themselves, and Sixx indicated that he might be open to the possibility of using avatars to replace Mötley Crüe when they’re done:

“I don’t know what the future holds. We did some stuff with holograms years ago before the technology was really fleshed out. At some point, we’re not gonna be here anymore. I mean, not to be a Debbie Downer, but it’s just not gonna happen. And how great for your band, or whatever it is that you do, to be able to go forward for generations and generations. So I think when the time is right, put us in a coffin and fire up those avatars.”

To keep up with the authenticity of the band, will the avatars also deny using backing tracks?

While the technology to replace a band with avatars might be available, it seems like bands may be overestimating how much fans will be willing to fork over to see a hologram of their favorite performer. As we’ve seen in the debate with AI in music lately, a lot of people argue that what will keep AI from truly taking over the music industry is the fact that fans want to have a real, live experience with a band and I don’t know that many people are going to be willing to spend as much to see an avatar as they once paid to see the real band.
