Knocked Loose Are Charting Higher on Spotify’s Viral 50 USA Chart Than Taylor Swift
Good news for fans who view music as a competition: Knocked Loose is currently charting higher than Taylor Swift on Spotify’s Viral 50 USA chart, as reported on earlier this week by Loudwire. The Loudwire article is three days old, and in the time since then, the gap between Knocked Loose’s highest charting song and Swift’s highest charting song has grown even more. Knocked Loose’s song “Suffocate,” which features guest vocals from Poppy, is currently located at #9 on the chart while Taylor Swift’s song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” which is all the way down at #40 on the chart. To add to that, another Knocked Loose song that’s been out longer, “Don’t Reach for Me,” is currently four spots above Swift at #36.
This achievement comes with some caveats, though, the biggest one being that the Viral 50 USA chart doesn’t measure how many times someone streams a song. Thus, this does not mean that Knocked Loose is getting streamed more times than Taylor Swift is, although I’m sure that many people who only read the headlines of our articles will see it that way. Here’s how Spotify explains that their charts work:
“Viral charts capture the songs gaining the most buzz on Spotify.
Chart placement is based on a few factors:
-If a song has recently risen in plays
-How often people share the song
-How many people recently discovered the song
-Viral charts are entirely data-driven.
Global charts use data from all listeners, and regional charts look at data among listeners in that particular region.”
So it’s not so much that Knocked Loose is getting more streams, but that it’s rising faster and getting more new listeners. Another caveat here is that “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” has been out for one week longer than “Suffocate,” so people have had more time to get bored with it.
Still, take the wins where you can get it, because this kind of thing doesn’t happen that often anymore. It’s not the ‘90s anymore, when hard rock music could dominate charts the same way pop music did. It’s unlikely that anyone from Knocked Loose is going to end up as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year this year like Taylor Swift did last year, so she’s still leading in popularity. But it’s definitely cool to see that Knocked Loose are this buzzworthy.
