Six Feet Under’s Latest Single Actually Kicks Ass, Killing For Revenge Coming This May
I know, I know. A pro-Six Feet Under and by proxy a pro-Chris Barnes headline on MetalSucks in 2024?! What the fuck is going on, am I right? That’s what I was thinking too when I sat down to listen to the death metal act’s new tune and heard something killer, rather than the disappointment we’ve experienced over the years.
Yet here we are. Released within the last hour or so, “Know-Nothing Ingrate” is the first single off the band’s upcoming record Killing For Revenge and I just have to say it — Barnes sounds fuckin’ great here. This ain’t your Nightmares Of The Decomposed-era Chris Barnes. The motherfucker on this one sounds pissed. It’s heavy, brutal, and to the point at just under two and a half minutes.
Barnes said he chose this track as the world’s introduction to Killing For Revenge because it was a sort of primer for the entire album’s core message, which is an emphatic “fuck you.”
“I chose the title Killing For Revenge after we completed writing and noticed that all the lyrics and storylines had a common theme of revenge. Revenge by human or revenge by nature. The album title describes the flow of the stories within the lyrics perfectly.”
Killing For Revenge is the follow-up to the aforementioned 2020 album Nightmares Of The Decomposed and the second one with both Barnes and ex-Cannibal Corpse guitarist Jack Owen. Barnes said he was happy to continue working with Owen because of their history in Cannibal Corpse.
Speaking of Owen, he said the new track “Know-Nothing Ingrate” came about early on in the process.
“This music was written early in the writing process. Wanting to keep the aggression of a prior Six Feet under song like ‘Amputator,’ I wrote music in the style of early Dark Angel or Kreator, who always had cool driving drumbeats. I had all the riffs in my head as I wrote the drums in a couple hours. Lyrically, I kicked around a phrase that fit the stop parts throughout the song. After coming up with ‘Know-Nothing Ingrate,’ the lyrics wrote themselves. It’s basically about online trolls who voice their uneducated and unnecessarily spiteful review of any artist’s output. You’re entitled to your opinion, and I’m entitled to mine.”
Killing For Revenge will come out on May 10 via Metal Blade Records, but you can preorder your copy in various formats today.
