Doro Releases Cover of Metallica’s “The Four Horsemen”

Germany’s Metal Queen herself, Doro, put out a Metallica cover from back in the days before all of Metallica’s members qualified for AARP. The latest single from Doro’s upcoming EP Conqueress – Extended is a cover of Metallica’s “The Four Horsemen” from the band’s 1983 debut album, Kill ‘Em All.

While obviously a classic Metallica song, Doro hardly chose the metal giants’ least controversial track. “The Four Horsemen” notoriously began as a Dave Mustaine-penned song called “The Mechanix” which was about having sex at a gas station. After kicking he was kicked out of the band, Mustaine reportedly asked Metallica not to use any of his songs, but instead James Hetfield slowed down “The Mechanix” and rewrote the lyrics to be about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (who, sadly, were not having sex in a gas station) and added a bridge and guitar solo in the middle. Thus, “The Four Horsemen” was born, while Mustaine went on to release his version of “Mechanix” on Megadeth’s Killing Is My Business…and Business is Good!

Doro talks about her reasons for wanting to cover the classic Metallica track:

“Metallica’s debut album Kill ‘Em All has just celebrated its 40th anniversary. I can still remember the first shows we played together in Europe in the mid-eighties. The Metallica guys (back then with Cliff Burton) were just great and we quickly became friends. There was a very special spirit of optimism in the metal scene that I like to remember. That’s why I re-recorded ‘The Four Horsemen’, one of the early Metallica classics. I still love the song.”
