Lord Dying

Clandestine Transcendence (MNRK Heavy)

We’re pretty big fans of sludge metal around these parts, so naturally this new offering from Portland, Oregon-based outfit Lord Dying landed pretty firmly in our good graces. Its songs tell as story that’s worth really paying attention to and thanks to its heavy hooks dripping with doom and dissonance, it’s a tale you’ll want to hear over and over again.

Saxon

Hell, Fire And Damnation (Silver Lining Music)

As one of the O.G.s of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, it’s amazing that the dudes in Saxon and still putting out new music in the year of our lord 2024. With this being their 24th full-length album, it’s oozing with the sort of confidence you can expect from a band that’s been around since 1978 (or 1970 if you count their previous iterations).

Upon Stone

Mixing melodic death metal with metalcore, this new release from Upon Stone also received high marks from one of our reviewers. In an age where bands these days strive for perfection, this one feels “lived in,” if that makes any sense. As our review states, “there is definitely some looseness, distortion, and even dirtiness on the recording of this record.” And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Vemod

The Deepening (Prophecy Productions)

Norwegian black metal outfit Vemod is back with their second full-length studio album titled The Deepening. As the band’s follow-up to 2012’s Venter på stormene, this bad boy also received acclaim from one of our other reviewers, who said it was “beautifully executed.” If you’re looking for something that sounds just as cold as it is outside, then this is the release for you.
