Oh shit! It’s a new year and while we’re already 12 days into this damn thing, this is the first STCOT of 2024. We had a bit of a break there and last week was a pretty quiet release week, but damn it if today doesn’t make up for it. So whaddaya say?! How about we get back into the flow of things?!
Alluvial
Death Is But A Door (Nuclear Blast)
As the band’s third release and their first EP, Alluvial’s Death Is But A Door is four new tracks to catch you up to date with what the Atlanta-based deathcore act is up to these days. While our reviewer wasn’t a fan of how things end on this one, it’s still a worthwhile slate of music that should easily kick your ass — especially with how absolutely fucking heavy they get with the remaining 75% of this one.
Escuela Grind
DDEEAATTHHMMEETTAALL (MNRK Heavy)
Everyone’s favorite “funded by big homo” band Escuela Grind is back on their bullshit, this time with an EP that focuses on yet another one of the group’s main influences — death metal. This badboy goes off pretty hard and doesn’t stop one bit. Add in a cameo from Napalm Death’s Barney Greenway, and you’ve got one hell of a shot of death metal to take straight to the dome.
Extinction A.D.
Ruthless Intent (Unique Leader Records)
This metallic hardcore group from Long Island went balls to the wall with their latest release, Ruthless Intent. If you like in your face crossover thrash/punky vibes, this release is right up your alley. This one’s an absolute must-listen if you’re looking for something to open up a pit to.
Infant Island
Obsidian Wreath (Secret Voice Records)
With a concept that’s apparently all about “trudging through the end of the world,” the third album from Virginia-based outfit Infant Island can draw its lineage directly out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meshing screamo with modern American black metal, this one’s definitely a trip.
Ryujin
Ryujin (Napalm Records)
What do you get when you mix heavy metal with an interesting blend of English and Japanese lyricism and traditional Japanese instrumentation? Well, you get Ryujin. This band has been around since 2011 and while they’ve gained some traction at major festivals worldwide, this latest album is looking to only build on that popularity. This latest release features Trivium’s Matt Heafy as both its producer and as a contributor on at least one of the songs on this release.
