ODDLY ENOUGH, THE PAIRING OF C.C. DEVILLE AND PAULY SHORE DID NOT BRING ABOUT THE APOCALYPSE

Right around the time that Poison were soldiering on with the C.C. DeVille-less Native Tongue, the crazy coked-up Jew from Brooklyn was trying to launch a solo career. Perhaps thinking he could duplicate the success of Poison’s cover of “Your Momma Don’t Dance,” DeVille started by doing a version of “Hey Good Lookin’” for the soundtrack to the Pauly Shore vehicle The Son-in-Law… with Spike from The Quireboys on vocals, no less.

I don’t remember having ever actually seen this video played on MTV at the time, or even being aware of its existence until it got mentioned on Poison’s episode of Behind the Music. But I do think it’s the video they should play at DeVille’s funeral, because it so perfectly illustrates his, uh, subtlety: you gotta love how DeVille uses eighteen different guitars over the course of a three minute clip, how he and Spike literally seem to be pushing and shoving one another for the spotlight (C.C. even lip syncs along with the melody, as though he might fool people into believing he’s the lead singer), but most of all, you gotta love the sequined “I’m Back!” hat.
