System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi Team Up on “Deconstruction” Single
If you need some star power to kick start your weekend, look no further than “Deconstruction,” featuring none other than Serj Tankian of System Of A Down and Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath.
The song, which dropped last week, also features Cesar Gueikian, president and CEO of Gibson Brands. The song combines the weirdness and choppy time signatures with the riffing powerhouse that is the god of Black Sabbath’s guitar work.
If those weren’t already good enough reasons to check out this song, it was also done as a charity track, with all proceeds going to the Armenia Fund’s Artsakh Refugee Initiative. As an Armenian, this cause is near and dear to Tankian’s heart.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Takian talked about what he contributed to the track, including lyrics from his poetry book, Cool Gardens:
“The funny thing was as I was singing it, I got the Layne Staley vibe, like Alice in Chains—that really deep, dark thing with harmonies like Jerry Cantrell‘s. There’s a certain aspect of what I did that reminded me of [Layne], almost like paying him homage, because it’s slow but hard… And then the second part was more trippy, almost poetry. But Cesar liked it.”
Iommi says about what he contributed:
“It was great to hook up with Serj again and also to do a track with Cesar. I think that he’s trying to steal my job!! Haha!! The Armenian people are really lovely people, and it’s a great pleasure, a great cause, and I’m very happy to be involved in it.”
Regarding the cause the music benefits, Gueikian adds:
“We asked ourselves how to use this song to bring awareness to Armenia and the Armenian situation and raise funds for Armenia. In addition to making music, Serj is an activist in service to Armenia, and Tony has ties to Armenia because many years ago, he was part of a group that funded a music school there. So the three of us have pledged any income the song makes to go to Armenia through the Armenia Fund.”
