Lost Ozzy Documentary Featuring Slipknot, Slayer and System Of A Down Coming
Did you know there’s an Ozzy Osbourne documentary out there called We Sold Our Souls For Rock ’N’ Roll that covers the admittedly insanely stacked Ozzfest ’99? Nah, you probably don’t because it’s still never officially seen the light of day.
Directed by Wayne’s World’s Penelope Spheeris, the film has languished in obscurity for so long, but it’s recently been given the green light by and was finally granted official Sharon Osbroune approval… over after 20 years.
The movie was initially shot in 1999 and has been waiting to air ever since. In a recent interview with The Metal Voice, Spheeris shares that the movie features Slipknot, Slayer, System of a Down, Fear Factory, and Rob Zombie, among other notable appearances.
Spheeris detailed the documentary, as well as the fallout she experienced as a result of it never getting approved for release during an interview on The Metal Voice.
“I did go to the Motion Picture Academy Museum [in August] because they screened We Sold Our Souls For Rock ’N’ Roll recently, which is a movie that I did with Sharon and Ozzy [Osbourne] 20 years ago.
“And it was never released. And it has Black Sabbath, original Black Sabbath, and Slipknot, Rob Zombie, System Of A Down, it’s got Godsmack, Fear Factory, blah, blah, blah, blah, 10 bands in it, with [ex-Guns ’N’ Roses guitarist] Buckethead playing guitar in a cemetery. And it’s a great film. And Sharon says she’s going to release it now. After 20 years.”
“[I] worked three years on that movie, and it never got released. I used to wake up in the morning, lay in bed, cry for a half an hour before I get out of bed because I never got the movie released. And now, I mean, it’s a historical document at this point of 1999 Ozzfest.”
So why was Sharon sitting on it for so long? Did she finally realize what was once cringy is retro and historical now, or is she looking to make a quick buck? Whatever it is, Spheeris and fans can both rejoice.
Meanwhile, Ozzy tells Metal Hammer that he’s still not done, despite what rumors say, and that he is planning another solo album and tour.
“I’m getting myself fit. I’ve done two albums fairly recently [2020’s Ordinary Man and 2022’s Patient Number 9], but I want to do one more album and then go back on the road.”
Things may be pretty rough in the world, but at least we’re living in the timeline with the secret, unreleased Ozzfest documentary and Ozzy still touring and making music.
