Dying Wish
Symptoms Of Survival (SharpTone)
Straddling the line between acerbic metalcore and melodic heavy metal, Portland, Oregon’s Dying Wish have a slate of songs that continue to draw upon their 2021 debut release Fragments of a Bitter Memory. Co-written, produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Randy LeBoeuf (The Acacia Strain, Kublai Khan TX, Jesus Piece), the album’s got an evocative sound that seeks to exorcise the demons of pain, trauma, loss, and regret.
Fuming Mouth
Last Day Of Sun (Nuclear Blast)
New England death metal outfit Fuming Mouth has gone through some seriously shit in recent history. Having nearly lost their lead singer, guitarist and founding member Mark Whelan to Acute Myeloid Leukemia, the band are back at full strength with their sophomore album Last Day Of Sun. This slate of 12 downright apocalyptic jams showcases the hellacious fury that’s built up within the band since their last release The Grand Descent. And if you want to witness the rage in person, they’re currently on tour with Devil Master and Final Gasp, so be sure to catch ’em at a venue near you.
Green Lung
This Heathen Land (Nuclear Blast)
Dripping with their classic rock and metal influences like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, heavy stoner/doom metal outfit Green Lung return with nine smoke-filled tracks that fuse the unmistakable sound of doom and stoner metal with the occult-ish tendencies of folk and NWOBHM. From beginning to end, this is definitely one album you’ll want to light one up for.
Spiritbox
The Fear of Fear (Pale Chord Music/Rise Records)
Keeping their yearly release schedule alive, Canadian alt-metal quartet Spiritbox are back with a new EP titled The Fear of Fear. After a little bit of internet shenanigans leading up to the EP’s announcement, the band is using this six-song release to build upon their 2021 album Eternal Blue. Listen, you know whether you like these guys already or not, so check this one out if it’s your cuppa tea and if not, just move on to the next one.
Suffocation
Hymns From The Apocrypha (Nuclear Blast)
Death metal stalwarts Suffocation have returned for their ninth full-length release with Hymns From The Apocrypha and this time it feels like they’re playing for fuckin’ keeps. As their first new studio release in six years and the first featuring vocalist Ricky Meyers, this shit is wild and uncompromising. It’s as punishing and exciting as you’d expect from a top shelf batch of modern death metal.
