Laura Jane Grace Drops “Dysphoria Hoodie” Single

0

I don’t know about you, but I love a good hoodie to curl up in on those cold days when I just need some shelter from everything going on. There’s something comforting about that fabric embrace. That piece of oversized clothing that helps validate us when we’d rather not be perceived is probably exactly what Against Me! founder and celebrated trans rights activist Laura Jane Grace was trying to tap into when writing her latest single, “Dysphoria Hoodie.”

As the first single in a so far unannounced solo album via Big Scary Monsters/Polyinyl Record Co., “Dysphoria Hoodie” is Grace’s first piece of new music since her 2021 EP, At War With The Silverfish. And while some of her fans will relate directly to the gender dysphoria aspect of the song, we can all relate to the feeling of wanting to disappear into something that gives us comfort, whether that’s a good book, a blanket fort, or an oversized comfort hoodie that we hide in on certain days.

“This is a song about gender dysphoria and your favorite hooded sweatshirt. Any trans person out there knows what a dysphoria hoodie is—It’s the hoodie you wear when feeling low and dysphoric, and you don’t want the world reading your gender. Hide your body shape; hide your head; disappear as much as you can. Wrap yourself up in it like a blanket anywhere you go. Make your flesh become cotton. Instant protection from the outside world.

“My dysphoria hoodie happens to be an Adidas hoodie. So yes, this is in fact really just a tribute song to my favorite Adidas hoodie.”

Though we don’t know anything else about her new solo album, we do know that Grace has some live shows coming up. You can check out the dates for those shows down below.
