Khanate Announce First Show in 19 Years
Back in May, we lost our collective minds when long silent band Khanate surprised us with the sudden release of To Be Cruel. It was the band’s first new album in 14 years, with 2009’s Clean Hands Go Foul previously serving as the band’s final gasp roughly three years after they’d broken up. They were gone until they suddenly weren’t.
Yet with a new batch of music and a renewed interest in the band, the revered drone/doom metal act announced within the last hour or so that they’ll return to the stage for the first time in nearly two decades at next year’s Roadburn Festival.
“As a collective, Khanate has been silent during our dormancy, but now we will get loud; very loud. We’ll be returning to the stage, to explore tension and the elasticity of time – at Roadburn 2024. Get dead.”
The band’s appearance is currently slated for Saturday, April 20, 2024. So if you have plans on making your way to Tilburg, The Netherlands to attend the festival, you’re in for a special treat. The festival’s artistic director Walter Hoeijmakers said Khanate’s return marks the festival’s starting point leading into the new year.
“We are incredibly proud that we can announce the return of Khanate as the starting point of Roadburn 2024. The impact of the band can be found in the current underground as the band has proven highly influential – even during their hiatus. We want Roadburn 2024 to reflect our very own ‘underground futurism’ approach – inspired by the past but firmly looking into the future as well. We will be pushing boundaries of what heavy is and can be – just as Khanate has done too. We expect this to be a hallmark edition, a sonic adventure we’ll embark on together.“
In addition to the festival date and this past May’s new album release, the band also announced today that they’ll be reissuing their back catalog, starting with their self-titled album and Things Viral. Both albums are available for preorder on vinyl right now.
