THIRTY NEW EPISODES OF BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD IN THE WORKS?

Vince and I are huge Beavis and Butt-Head fans, as any intelligent, self-respecting metalheads should be. The show was hilarious, deceptively intelligent, and a reflection of pretty much every great male friendship ever. (In our relationship, Vince and I are in agreement that he’s the Beavis and I’m the Butt-Head. Which one are you?) So this news from REVIEWniverse is potentially very exciting:

REVIEWniverse has exclusively learned from an anonymous source that Mike Judge is currently outlining 30 new episodes of his iconic animated comedy Beavis and Butt-Head for its native network.

The source conceded that plans for actual broadcast are not yet cemented, or even a given, but confirmed that the King of the Hill/Office Space/Idiocracy maestro is definitely in the midst of writing new B and B material with the hopes of a full-throttle return.

Even better news for fans is that, should this come to pass, Judge plans on retaining the show’s original ghetto-tech aesthetic, right down to the faded color palatte. The source also reveals that the Extract director intends on keeping B and B‘s format identical to its original sketch-videos-sketch incarnation, but with more contemporary music clips for the cartoon slacker-duo to skewer.

The article goes on to point out that in this day and age, if for some reason Judge can’t find a network to broadcast these new episodes on television, he can just release ’em over the internet. Although I’d wager that B and B is tied to Viacom, the corporate entity that owns both MTV and Paramount, the studio that released the feature film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. That’s just an educated guess, though; maybe everyone’s favorite idiots are free agents now.

In any case, I’d very much like to see this become a reality, even if I feel compelled to be my usual cynical self and point out that with King of the Hill off the air, Idiocracy going straight to video and Extract just outright shitting the bed, Judge’s decision to return to his most iconic characters may not be motivated purely by artistic desire. Could still be cool, though.

Some of you may remember that Judge briefly revived Beavis and Butt-Head last summer as part of the promotional campaign for Extract. (Alas, it didn’t help sell many tickets. The movie’s reported $8 million production budget combined with its who-knows-how-many-millions-of-dollars promotional budget mean its $10 million box office take probably didn’t earn anyone a profit, although ancillary markets like cable and DVD may have ultimately pushed it into the black.) Shortly thereafter Judge gave an interview where he hinted about potential story lines for future B and B episodes, including the fellas working tech support and trying to purchase a Mercedes; either one of those concepts sounds potentially hilarious to me.
