Iced Earth Shirt Featured in eHarmony “Get Who Gets You” Ad
As a troubled metalhead, all you want is someone who gets you, right? That’s what the folks at eHarmony are assuming and, based on your behavior in the comments section and in our DMs, they’re probably right. Fortunately, eHarmony make their message loud and clear: there’s someone out there for you, whether you’re a normie or a hesher or a January 6, 2021 insurrectionist.
Wait, what?
An eHarmony ad titled “Get Who Gets You” was posted on December 1, 2022 but came to the attention of MetalSucks this weekend thanks to a loyal reader. The brief ad, which probably runs before you watch a YouTube video, features two people getting ready in the morning. One of them tries on an Iced Earth shirt, smells it, makes a face and then returns it to the hamper, which you can see in the edited photo above.
I know what they’re going for here—being a metalhead often makes someone an outsider in the eyes of society and therefore you want to find someone who gets you. It’s just a funny thing to pick Iced Earth—by the time this ad first ran in 2022, it had been nearly two years since Iced Earth rhythm guitarist and primary songwriter Jon Schaffer was photographed participating in the storming of the United States Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
In all fairness to eHarmony, I’m sure they didn’t intentionally choose Iced Earth because of Schaffer’s actions. They were a popular metal band before the pandemic flipped the world on its head and the logo is barely visible in the photo, so it’s not like they were making a centerpiece out of it. They probably didn’t even think twice about using it, because what are the odds that the rhythm guitarist in the band on the T-shirt was arrested by federal authorities and awaiting sentencing in 2023? It’s just another reminder to use Google before you invest money in an advertising campaign that is dependent upon the T-shirt your main actor is wearing.
As for Schaffer, he’s currently awaiting sentencing after he plead guilty to obstructing an official proceeding of Congress and trespassing on restricted Capitol grounds with a dangerous weapon. He cooperated with the investigation in order to have other charges dropped.
