NASA Using “Fuel” to Hype Up Upcoming Artemis Mission Proves Metallica is for Nerds
There are few things more metal and daunting than the cold, black infinite reaches of space. So naturally we humans want to fuck around with the infinite void — even though it very much would kill all of us in an instant — by sending our best/brightest men and women out there by strapping them to a massive missile.
NASA’s planning on sending some people out on a lunar flyby next year using a brand new rocket and to promote that effort, they released a video highlighting the men and women heading out on that mission. And what better music to put that sizzle reel to than Metallica‘s 1996 banger “Fuel”?
According to NASA’s website on next year’s Artemis mission, the space agency said the trip will feature the first woman and person of color to set foot on the moon, along with some other firsts along the way. Ultimately, this is just one step in NASA’s goal of eventually sending humans to Mars.
“With Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon, using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before. We will collaborate with commercial and international partners and establish the first long-term presence on the Moon. Then, we will use what we learn on and around the Moon to take the next giant leap: sending the first astronauts to Mars.”
It’s interesting that they chose “Fuel,” though. Personally I would have gone for something a little more along the lines of “Wherever I May Roam” or “Lux Æterna” for the “full speed or nothing” line alone. Or even better, why not Black Sabbath’s “Into the Void” — the metal options are endless.
