Brits Name Huge Metal Bull in Birmingham After Ozzy Osbourne

Last year, British heavy metal giant Ozzy Osbourne made headlines by closing out the 2022 Commonwealth Games by performing a couple Black Sabbath songs in front of a packed house. It made for great footage and saw what looked like a mostly healthy Ozzy doing what he does best.

Yet one attraction at the Commonwealth Games that didn’t make headlines was the massive, 33-foot tall mechanical bull structure that stood outside the Commonwealth Games during and after the festivities. Earlier this week the BBC reported that results of a public vote to name the structure revealed that fans decidedly chose to name it after the “Prince of Darkness” himself.

After learning of the news, Ozzy told the BBC that he was excited by the news, since he grew up in Birmingham.

“I am absolutely blown away. Thank you for all your votes. And Birmingham forever.”

The structure was originally destined for the scrapyard following last year’s games, but nearly 10,000 signatures were collected in a petition to save and showcase it somewhere. As a compromise, officials decided to set it up in its new permanent location right outside the Birmingham New Street railway station.

According to officials, more than 28,000 votes were cast in the bid to name the structure, with Ozzy securing more than 70% of the votes. According to the BBC, other names that made the shortlist were: “Bostin, a well-used Midlands phrase meaning excellent; Brummie, describing people who come from Birmingham; and Boulton, after pioneering 18th Century industrialist Matthew Boulton.”

Speaking about the fan vote, West Midlands mayor Andy Street said the public “couldn’t have made a clearer choice” for the bull’s name.

“Like people right across our region, I cannot wait to see Ozzy take pride of place in New Street Station in a triumphant homecoming this summer – proudly bearing the name of the Prince of Darkness himself.”
