Fear Factory
Re-Industrialized (Nuclear Blast)
Because nothing is ever simple when it comes to industrial metal legends Fear Factory, the band lineup was experiencing turmoil at the timing of writing for their 2012 record, The Industrialist, since drummer Gene Hoglan had been dismissed. Dino Cazares and drummer John Sankey ended up programming the drums and it was released as such. Re-Industrialized features live drumming and the vocals of ex-vocalist Burton C. Bell, which makes it an interesting curio. Still, it begs the question—who asked for this?
Graf Orlock
End Credits (Vitriol Records)
There’s something to be said for going out gracefully and Graf Orlock are doing just that on the appropriately-titled End Credits. Releasing 20 years after the band initially formed to rebel against the popularity of melodic metal, Graf Orlock remain faithful to spreading their love of grind, hardcore punk and movies. Graf Orlock may not go out as box office legends but they’ll always be our indie darlings.
Power Trip
Live In Seattle: 05.28.2018 (Southern Lord)
There’s not much that hasn’t already been said about Power Trip‘s live shows. The crossover thrash heroes were a force of nature fronted by the larger-than-life vocalist Riley Gale and Live in Seattle captures a lot of that magic. The 12-song setlist covers just about every banger and hit Power Trip had in their discography, a bittersweet reminder how much Power Trip rule.
Vexed
Negative Energy (Napalm)
UK trio Vexed ride the nü-metal wave right into 2023 on their sophomore effort, Negative Energy. The album, which comes two years after their debut, proudly wears its influences from nü metal, djent, Meshuggah, metalcore and electronica on its sleeve. Combined with edgy and personal lyrics, Vexed are a potent combination of nostalgia and new—like Kittie meets Issues.
Xasthur
Inevitably Dark (Prophecy Productions)
Inevitably Dark is an intriguing new release from Xasthur and the band’s mastermind, Scott Conner. Returning at times to the black metal style Xasthur became known for in the early aughts, Inevitably Dark also dips its toes in doomgrass, dark ambient, darkwave, folk and more. Recorded live and with no vocals, Inevitably Dark captures a sense of loneliness and wanderlust, perhaps an extension of the fact that the songs were written about Conner’s experiences living in his car and in hotels.
