Boris & Uniform
Bright New Disease (Sacred Bones)
Bright New Disease is the latest pandemic-recorded album to be released during more normal times. The album certainly reflects the time it was made during—cacophonous, anxiety-ridden and overflowing with emotion. Bright New Disease retains the identity of both projects, though it usually feels more Boris with a hint of Uniform than Uniform with a hint of Boris.
Creeping Death
Boundless Domain (MNRK Heavy)
Finally, something for the state of Texas to be proud of! Death metal/hardcore hybrid Creeping Death dish out their second album, and first in four years, reminding the scene why they are the kings of the death metal/hardcore crossover scene. If you like riffs and mosh parts, you can’t go wrong with what Creeping Death have to offer on Boundless Domain.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation (KGWL)
On their umpteenth album, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard return to their thrashier stylings. PetroDragonic Apocalypse sort of resembles if Sleep played doom-thrash, which works better in some instances than in others; “Gila Monster” is the highlight of the album, an almost guaranteed stoner metal classic. “Witchcraft” has some seriously-psychedelic vibes and “Dragon” brings the speed and the grooves. PetroDragonic Apocalypse isn’t essential King Gizz but it’s a fun release from the prolific Australians.
Queens of the Stone Age
In Times New Roman… (Matador)
It’s been a long few years for Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme but the band are back with their first album since 2017’s Villains. Notably bringing things back to their bluesy roots, Queens of the Stone Age power through 50 minutes of gritty, therapeutic tunes. It would be dishonest to call In Times New Roman… a return to form, but it’s an attempt to get back.
Royal Thunder
Rebuilding the Mountain (Spinefarm)
The reformed Royal Thunder are back, powering on as a trio after the departure of guitarist Will Fiore. Technically having broken up and reformed, Rebuilding the Mountain feels triumphant. The band members are now sober and seeking a new direction, in life and in music, which they’ve found with concise and catchy songwriting. Rebuilding the Mountain is full of classic rock and psychedelic swagger but it’s also a reflective album that will no doubt yield further rewards with more listening. This is the record you really need this week.
