Thra Destroy Everything on “Cosmic Scourge”
Phoenix-based death metal outfit Thra are having a big year. After crushing a tour with Conan, the sludgy death dealers are slated to release their new album, Forged in Chaotic Spew, in July. Though the release date is still nearly two months away, MetalSucks has a new taste of the album in the form of penultimate track “Cosmic Scourge.”
As one of the longer songs on Forged in Chaotic Spew, “Cosmic Scourge” explores Thra’s sludge and death/doom influences, stretching out over nearly six minutes. As the band explain, it’s a song about the bigger things in life, like the end of it.
“‘Cosmic Scourge’ is a song about the end of all things as we know it and coming face to face with death. It’s our most death-doom inspired song…with a couple surprises.”
Speaking about Forged in Chaotic Spew when it was announced, vocalist Robert Wolfe explains:
“This record is a compilation of self expression throughout the last ten years of our lives. This is our contribution to heavy music and we put the darkest parts of our hearts into crafting these songs. All these songs come from very different time periods between now and when we were teenagers, so each song has a very different sound, but they still encompass the overall feeling we have come to portray as Thra.”
If you like what you hear and you’re in the Arizona area, Thra are scheduled to perform with Yob and Pallbearer on July 21 at the Nile Theater. Otherwise, get your pre-orders in via Translation Loss and blast “Cosmic Scourge” until July 28.
