Life Is But A Dream… (Warner)
After months of saying wacky things and advocating for the use of psychedelics in the songwriting process, Avenged Sevenfold’s latest effort is here. Life Is But A Dream… sees the band work in new influences and try new things. Life Is But A Dream… doesn’t work in a lot of ways—many of the songs feel like bits and pieces of disparate ideas cut-and-pasted together—but is frustratingly good at other times because, well, at their core, Avenged Sevenfold are one of the most talented modern metal bands.

Dab City (Heavy Psych Sounds)
Madison, Wisconsin’s pride and joy return with their latest tribute to getting high, Dab City. Featuring a track list of seven songs all about weed—including the spectacularly-titled “Cannonbongs (The Ballad of Burnt Reynolds as Lamented by Gentleman Dixie Dave Collins)”—Dab City is a reminder of why Bongzilla have been a staple of the stoner metal scene for nearly three decades. Listen to this one while burning your favorite strain for maximum effect and all hail the Kings of Weed.
Dieth
To Hell and Back (Napalm)
If you’ve read MetalSucks at all over the last few months, you know David Ellefson has a new record coming out with his new band Dieth. Featuring former members of Entombed A.D. and Decapitated, Dieth are built from a death-thrash mold but To Hell and Back has a lot of different flair, with escapades into stoner metal, psychedelia, death metal, doom and groove metal, as well as the expected ballad. Ellefson even sings on one song! While Ellefson’s efforts with Kings of Thrash feel like a weird attempt to relive the glory days, Dieth is a different and fresh story.
Pupil Slicer
Blossom (Prosthetic)
Do you miss The Dillinger Escape Plan? Well, I can’t give you The Dillinger Escape Plan back but I can give you Blossom, the sophomore album from UK sensation Pupil Slicer. Building on their genre-pushing debut, Mirrors, Pupil Slicer wrote a concept record that blends the band’s love of science fiction, rock operas, video games and dystopian fiction with lived experiences. Blossom is one of the most ambitious heavy records of the year.
Wytch Hazel
Wytch Hazel IV: Sacrament (Bad Omen)
British retro heavy rockers are back with their fourth effort, subtitled Sacrament. There’s a clear lineage from bands like Pagan Altar who recall the glory days of proto-metal but Sacrament is mostly a hard-rocking, foot-stomping good time that will scratch the itch for any fans of trad metal or stoner rock.
