Anthrax is Back in the Studio Recording Their Next Album
It looks like (most of) the boys of Anthrax are back together in the same room to begin laying down tracks for their follow up to 2016’s For All Kings and I cannot be more stoked for this news than I already am. It’s been too long since the thrash metal stalwarts put some new original tunes out there into the world.
While referencing Jaws by saying they’re “going to need a bigger boat,” Scott Ian, Frank Bello, and Charlie Benante began working with producer Jay Ruston to lay the groundwork for what will eventually become their as of yet untitled new release in a Los Angeles, California recording studio.
There’s been rumblings of a new Anthrax album being in the works for a while now. Back in January, Ian and Benante revealed during that they had “11 musical arrangements” ready for the new record. However, due to COVID-19 delays and scheduling issues between Benante’s commitment to the Pantera grind in recent months and Ian’s work with Mr. Bungle, they’ve had to postpone working on the new record.
According to the trio in the studio, they’re doing the groundwork now so second guitarist Jonathan Donais and vocalist Joey Belladonna can come in later and lay down their parts.
It’s interesting to see them working on a full-fledged album, given the comments both men made during that interview with Metal Edge.
“Yeah. It’s all so different now. Slipknot’s saying now why even make full albums anymore. I get it. I get all sides of it. I still love a full album, but at the same time I totally understand the idea of what’s the point of giving someone 11 songs. Most people don’t listen to albums anymore. So, yeah — why not parse it out? I don’t know. All I know is at some point in the next few months we’ll probably have 14 or 15 things and then we’ll have to decide when we’re going to record it and how we’re going to release it.”
There’s no release date or album title set for new recording yet, but I know there’s a lot of excitement behind this pending 2024 release.
