Morbid Angel’s Trey Azagthoth Doesn’t Consider Fan Opinions: “If You Don’t Like It, F*ck You”
Long-running death metal progenitors Morbid Angel have released some of the genre’s most important documents, but they’ve also released a few that left fans scratching their heads, like 2011’s Illud Divinum Insanus. In a new interview, guitarist Trey Azagthoth defending the band’s writing choices in a pretty blunt manner. The guitarist told the interviewer that he doesn’t take fan opinion into consideration when he writes music; according to him, if you don’t like Azagthoth’s music, you can hit the highway.
“The way I look at it when I write my music, if people don’t like it, fuck you. Fuck you. Go listen to some other band. I write fucking music for myself. I don’t write music for any fans, and if they don’t like it, then they can just fucking move on to some other band or whatever. That’s the way I look at it. I’m not really afraid, like, ‘Well, I hope I’m catchy’ and ‘I hope this is gonna be trending’ or whatever like that. Actually, I’m trying to do anti-trends… It’s a big ‘fuck you’ to anybody that thinks they wanna follow trends or rules or things like that; they think that’s important. Other than coming from yourselves.”
In case you didn’t get the message the first time, the guitarist reiterated his message:
“I don’t need other people to make me feel valid. I determine that by myself… If you don’t like it, fuck you. That’s the way I look at it.”
Morbid Angel were performing in Belvidere, Illinois last month when the roof of the Apollo Theatre collapsed, killing one person and injuring dozens of others. They have a few more dates remaining on their 2023 tour with Revocation, Vitriol and Cryptae.
