Review: Jesus Piece’s …So Unknown is Pure, Ripping, Riff-Fueled Fury

Jesus Piece‘s new album …So Unknown, out now via Century Media, is a blistering and uncompromising assault on the senses. The Philadelphia hardcore band have been steadily gaining momentum since their 2018 debut, Only Self, and …So Unknown is a clear step forward and a record that focuses more on riffs and song structures than most hardcore albums.

Full of pummeling riffs, thunderous drums, and Aaron Heard’s guttural vocals, this offering is more than just a collection of heavy songs. …So Unknown is at times a deeply personal album, with Heard writing about his struggles with addiction, depression, and self-doubt.

The album opens with the title track, a slow-burning burner that builds to a devastating climax. “I’m so unknown,” Heard screams, “I’m so unknown to myself.” The song is a powerful reminder that we’re all fighting our own battles and that we’re not alone.

Unlike some of the band’s previous, more raw releases, the production is top-notch. The guitars sound huge; the drums sound thunderous, and Heard’s vocals are perfectly mixed.

Overall, …So Unknown is a fantastic album. It’s a must-listen for fans of hardcore just getting into Jesus Piece or those who have been following the band since the beginning. And, as they’ve already proven by debuting some of these tracks in a live setting, it holds up on stage as well.
