Check Out Intoxicated’s Cover of Angry Samoans’ “Gas Chamber,” Featuring Ken Andrews of Obituary
Florida thrash metal outfit Intoxicated are paying tribute to their punk rock heroes with a new cover of the Angry Samoans’ track “Gas Chamber,” and they’re doing it with a little help from their friend Ken Andrews, of Obituary.
Clocking in at a robust 64 seconds (as all good punk does), the track is a fast and acerbic look at the frustration that comes from feeling stuck. Intoxicated vocalist/guitarist Erik Payne said the inspiration behind the cover stemmed from his early exposure to punk and metal through skateboarding and his older brother.
“Growing up with an older brother and skate ramp in the backyard was a musical and cultural gift in my case. I was exposed to a ton of great punk and metal at an early age and Angry Samoans were always a stand out for me. Listening back to Gas Chamber recently, I just started playing along with heavy distortion it sounded so pissed!”
Payne said it only made sense for him to get Andrews to hop on the track and add some more punch to it. Having played on Intoxicated’s early material and traveled with them as part of Andrew W.K.’s touring band, Payne said adding Andrews only made sense.
“Ken has always been like a fifth member of Intoxicated and has contributed in some way on the majority of our albums/earlier EPs… our history/friendship runs deep.”
What they ended up with is a fuckin’ killer punk cover that’s got some of that sweet, sweet thrash flavor injected into it. You can check it out in the video below — just try not to mosh or pogo too hard.
