Code Orange Drop Remix Album, What Is Really Underneath?
Hardcore-kids-turned-nü-metal-revivalists Code Orange are always willing to dig their heels in when it concerns the band’s musical and visual aesthetic. It’s the band’s most admirable quality: they have a vision and they want to bring it to life. Admittedly, it sometimes works better than others, but that’s art for you, baby.
Today, they dropped What Is Really Underneath?, a remix album based on their 2020 release, Underneath. According to the official presser, What Is Really Underneath signifies the end of an era for Code Orange, one the they say began with the original album.
“Part remix, part soundtrack What Is Really Underneath?, contains elements of the 2020 album while digging deeper down into the Underneath universe with original unreleased companion pieces. The album, which was produced by Jami Morgan and Eric ‘Shade’ Balderose, is out now via Blue Grape Music and closes a chapter of the band that saw a Grammy Nomination, groundbreaking live-stream performances in the midst of the pandemic, tours with Slipknot, $UICIDEBOY$ and KORN, their Coachella debut, and more.”
What Is Really Underneath? comes with more than just a remix album, though. Balderose helmed a short film, created using Cinema 4D and Octant Render, that tells the story of character Mudman’s journey to be cleansed of sin. The video is a trip, allegedly taking 2,000 hours to create over the course of four months.
Additionally, Morgan and Balderose designed an alternate reality game that can be played on desktop or mobile to go with the release. According to the release:
“The game is fully immersive and has a 360-degree design which can be navigated by clicking and dragging different points within the room via mobile or desktop. The site sends fans down the rabbit hole like only Code Orange can do, offering up a labyrinth of clickables, ciphers, games, and Easter eggs.”
All of the aforementioned projects are out now. It’s really neat to see Code Orange try out different approaches and we’ll see where the next chapter of the band takes them. For now, find out what lies beneath.
