Darkthrone
Goatlord: Original (Peaceville)
If you’re familiar with Darkthrone’s debut album Soulside Journey, you know the band’s beginnings lie in death and not black metal. Originally intended to be their second album, Goatlord was shelved, A Blaze in the Northern Sky was released and the trajectory of black metal was forever altered. Goatlord was released in 1996, with Fenriz adding vocals two years prior, but the band have officially released it the way it was originally recorded. It’s Darkthrone, it’s death metal. Get into it.

Dark Waters (Napalm)
The Dutch symphonic metal group returned with a fresh lineup. Anchored by founding keyboardist and primary songwriter Martijn Westerholt and featuring new singer Diana Leah, Dark Waters brings back multiple previous members of Delain and strikes a balance between past and future. Available via Gimme Metal.
In Flames
Foregone (Nuclear Blast)
If you’ve heard the singles, you already know: In Flames found their mojo and they brought it back on Foregone. As our own Jakk Mylde wrote in his review, “Foregone is a stick of dynamite with a first-place ribbon attached; a sensational rejuvenation that even the staunchest doomsayers will have a hard time picking apart. Even with the faults present, it blends what made the band so good in their prime with the unique components of the current line-up to make an album that stands well within the territory of the best they’ve put out before it. Rejoice, people, for In Flames have returned.” You wanna own this one.
