Sh*t That Comes Out Today – February 10, 2023
Have you ever tasted the blood of your enemies upon your lips as they cower before you, their spirits as broken as their bodies? This Friday is about crushing your enemies’ skulls as hard as that new Dying Fetus song does, so keep reading to see what’s good this week and have a look at what titles are available physically via Gimme Metal.
Darkthrone
Goatlord: Original (Peaceville)
If you’re familiar with Darkthrone’s debut album Soulside Journey, you know the band’s beginnings lie in death and not black metal. Originally intended to be their second album, Goatlord was shelved, A Blaze in the Northern Sky was released and the trajectory of black metal was forever altered. Goatlord was released in 1996, with Fenriz adding vocals two years prior, but the band have officially released it the way it was originally recorded. It’s Darkthrone, it’s death metal. Get into it.
Delain
Dark Waters (Napalm)
The Dutch symphonic metal group returned with a fresh lineup. Anchored by founding keyboardist and primary songwriter Martijn Westerholt and featuring new singer Diana Leah, Dark Waters brings back multiple previous members of Delain and strikes a balance between past and future. Available via Gimme Metal.
In Flames
Foregone (Nuclear Blast)
If you’ve heard the singles, you already know: In Flames found their mojo and they brought it back on Foregone. As our own Jakk Mylde wrote in his review, “Foregone is a stick of dynamite with a first-place ribbon attached; a sensational rejuvenation that even the staunchest doomsayers will have a hard time picking apart. Even with the faults present, it blends what made the band so good in their prime with the unique components of the current line-up to make an album that stands well within the territory of the best they’ve put out before it. Rejoice, people, for In Flames have returned.” You wanna own this one.
Negative Blast
Echo Planet (Three One G)
Hardcore crew Negative Blast are a lot of fun. Featuring a roster of veteran musicians (including members of OFF, Hot Snakes, Earthless, CON•TACT, etc), Echo Planet is a foot-stomping, fast-paced romp through distorted power chords and reverb-soaked vocals. If you’re a fan of Gel, Pissed Jeans, Black Flag or The Rival Mob, tune in to Echo Planet—it’s only 20 minutes and you’ll be back for more.
