Periphery Released Two New Tracks, Including One That Was Inspired by Hit Indie Game Hades
Earlier today, the prog metal and totally not djent band Periphery released their two new singles, “Wildfire” and “Zagreus,” as promised. Both are featured on their upcoming album Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre, which will release via 3 Dot Recordings on March 10.
We’re just gonna let you listen to the two new tracks below. As far as Periphery songs go, they’re pretty much what you’d come to expect over the years, which is to say it’s technically impressive and well produced. Of note is the fact that “Wildfire” features a guest saxophone performance by Jørgen Munkeby of Shining.
Of particular note is the inspiration behind the track “Zagreus.” If you’re a massive gaming nerd like me, the name instantly grabbed your attention, as not only is Zagreus a figure in Greek mythology, but he’s also the protagonist of the equally metal and gorgeous indie video game Hades by Supergiant Games.
It turns out that reference was by design, as guitarist Misha Mansoor tweeted in the wee hours of this morning thanking Supergiant for the inspiration, specifically calling out the company’s audio director and all around nice guy, Darren Korb.
Guitarist Mark Holcomb said the new album and supporting singles were the result of some serious effort from the band, resulting in them becoming a more tightly knit group.
“We spent more time on Periphery V than any other release in our history,” explains Mark Holcomb. “We challenged and pushed ourselves harder, and along the way we grew even closer as a band. We are so proud of the final results! I also wanted to mention how exceedingly grateful we are to our fans for being so patient in waiting for this record. We wanted to show our appreciation by giving you two songs today instead of one. We have a very busy 2023 and 2024 planned so we’ll see you on the road!”
Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre is being touted as a self-produced release by the band, with bassist Adam “Nolly” Getgood once again getting behind the controls in the studio, both in terms of recording, producing, and mixing the album.
Periphery will release Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre on March 10, though you can preorder your copy today via 3 Dot Recordings.
