Voivod
Ultraman (Century Media)
Progressive metal overlords Voivod prove they still know how to have fun with this strange new EP that features covers of the opening, closing and battle themes from the show Ultraman. The vinyl version of the release features Japanese language covers of the songs as well, performed by guitarist Chewy. Gimme Metal doesn’t have Ultraman DVDs but they do have records!
Black Anvil
Regenesis (Season of Mist)
New York City’s reigning black metal champions Black Anvil continue to refine their thrash-laden take on black metal on Regenesis, their first album in five years. Like 2017’s As Was and 2014’s Hail Death, Black Anvil aren’t afraid to expand the scope of their black metal without deviating from the genre. Read our interview and grab a copy via Gimme Metal.
Devin Townsend
Lightwork (InsideOut Music)
The inimitable Devin Townsend continues his experimentations on Lightwork, an admittedly more song-oriented album than the records that precede it. Those familiar with Townsend will probably feel an instant sense of familiarity with the new album thanks in large part to its warm tones but the sweeping compositions are worth hearing again and again. Available now.
Ingested
Ashes Lie Still (Metal Blade)
Get your ass kicked with the new album from deathcore heavyweights Ingested. Featuring guest appearances from members of Aborted and Trivium, Ashes Lie Still is a pummeling listen that will give you “enough energy to kick God in the dick and run through every wall in my way until at least lunch time.” There are elements of deathcore, death metal and slam on the new record, which is guaranteed to drop your IQ a few points.
The Offering
Seeing the Elephant (Century Media)
The Offering don’t give a fuck about genres, but “a cross between progressive metalcore and Nevermore” is an OK start. Seeing the Elephant refines just about everything from the band’s fascinating debut album and brings together a cohesive sound that owes as much to nü and groove metal as it does death and progressive metal. “Flower Children” is an anti-boomer banger, “Rose Fire” is one of the most interesting metalcore songs I’ve heard in a long time and “My Heroine” is not a Silverstein cover. If the thought of mixing cleans and screams disgusts you, skip this one. Otherwise, grab it now. There’s a lot to digest.
