Heavy metal’s biggest vikings have returned! Swedish death metal unit Amon Amarth are as consistently killer as ever on The Great Heathen army, so raise your stein and bang your head. We’re pretty stoked about their North American tour with Carcass, Obituary and Cattle Decapitation too.

Ether Coven

The Relationship Between the Hammer And the Nail (Good Fight)

Despite, or because of, its warmer climates and proximity to Walt Disney World, Florida seems like a pretty miserable place to live and Fort Lauderdale’s Ether Coven aren’t exactly changing our minds. The Relationship Between the Hammer and the Nail walks the line between demoralizing sludge and melodic post-metal with a non-corny grace that few bands can achieve convincingly. Believe the hype behind this band. Besides, “Psalm of Cancer” features Integrity singer Dwid Hellion and who doesn’t love Integrity?

Soulfly

Totem (Nuclear Blast)

Totem, the new album from Max Cavalera‘s formerly-nü crew Soulfly, blends death metal, thrash and groove in a way that’s interesting and fresh thanks to Cavalera’s signature style. Father Cavalera said it was a two-year writing journey and celebration of spirituality with his son and drummer, Zyon, which certainly gives the album a nice and personal touch.

Toxik

Dis Morta (Massacre)

Reactivated underground tech-thrash heroes Toxik are back with their first proper album since reforming in 2013. The New Yorkers’ ferocious riffing style is still alive but it’s a lot more cleaned up and well produced this time around. If you’re clamoring for a dose of speed, give Dis Morta a whirl.

Psycroptic

Divine Council (Prosthetic)

New music from Australian tech-death quintet Psycroptic is always a good thing and Divine Council delivers plenty of good stuff. It comes two years after EP The Watcher of All and boy does it hit the spot. Divine Council is easily one of the best technical death metal albums of 2022.
