Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” Just Cracked the Billboard Hot 100 For the First Time Ever

The latest season of Netflix’s Stephen Kingeriffic YA show Stranger Things has brought two classic ’80s tracks to the forefront of our culture. The first is Kate Bush’s ethereal pop song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God),” which is used to summon Sadie Sink’s Max out of the evil dimension called the Upside-Down. The second is Metallica‘s “Master of Puppets,” arguably the greatest metal song of all time, which is shredded by Joseph Quinn’s now-beloved metalhead character Eddie Munson in order to save his fellows from a horde or terrordactyls (or something — truth be told, we haven’t watch the season yet). And now, both tracks have given their makers their much-deserved rewards — while Bush is making millions off of “Running Up That Hill,” Metallica just saw “Master of Puppets” crack Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first time since it was released 36 years ago.

Yup, right now “Master of Puppets” is at the #40 slot on Billboard’s Hot 100 list, just above Lil Nas X’s “That’s What I Want” and below Parmalee’s “Take My Name” (it shows just how un-hip we are that while we know Lil Nas X, we have no fucking clue who Parmalee are). This is the first time the track has ever charted for Billboard, because, well, because when it was first released in 1986, Master of Puppets was an indie album. Sure, it was a massive win for Metallica, and is now regarded as one of the best records of any genre ever made, much less metal. But when it dropped, this was just what longhair kids listened to. Transcending that based on its songwriting and the talent of its makers took decades.

All of which is to say: kudos, Metallica! You don’t really need another notch on your belt, but hey, this is a cool one to have.
