Trailer: The New David Cronenberg Movie Looks Absolutely Insane

When it comes to the human body as meat, no director has taken the risks and plumbed the depths of the human imagination like David Cronenberg. The Canadian filmmaker changed how we perceive horror with films like 1977’s The Brood, 1983’s Videodrome, and his 1986 remake of The Fly. Not content only with sci-fi, though, Cronenberg also examined how our bodies and psyches collide with real-world films like 1996’s Crash, 2005’s A History of Violence, and 2007’s Eastern Promises. Now, a trailer has been released for Cronenberg’s new film Crimes of the Future, and damn if it doesn’t seem like a movie that’ll have us squirming in our seats.

The synopsis, via Bloody Disgusting:

 “As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner, Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), a celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances.

“Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed…Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.”

According to Cronenberg:

“Crimes of the Future is a meditation on human evolution…the ways in which we have had to take control of the process because we have created such powerful environments that did not exist previously…[It’s] an evolution of things I have done before. Fans will see key references to other scenes and moments from my other films. That’s a continuity of my understanding of technology as connected to the human body. Technology is always an extension of the human body, even when it seems to be very mechanical and non-human.”
