Cancer Bats
Psychic Jailbreak (Bat Skull Records/New Damage Records)
They may be down a member, but hardcore punk trio Cancer Bats are hardly out for the count. Sporting the perfect top-down-driving-out-to-the-coast aesthetic, Psychic Jailbreak provides the grimy, driving release that goes just right with a little sand in your beer and the sweet escape of the weekend ahead. It’s just some good old-fashioned upbeat, degenerate metal. Amen.
Darkher
The Buried Storm (Prophecy)
Dark and dissonant, The Buried Storm combines doom-laden guitars and otherworldly vocals to create a haunting atmosphere that is sure to rival your darkest fever dreams. With Jayn Maiven’s vocal harmonies at the center of each track, the instrumentation is often reduced to only cello and violin, resulting in a gloomy yet beautiful ambience. Invoking the subdued fury of bands like Neurosis and Triptykon, Darkher is definitely worth checking out for anyone searching for a more contemplative alternative to the other heavier assault of the music they listen to.
Månegarm
Ynglingaättens Öde (Napalm)
Swedish pagan metal veterans Månegarm are stomping into the scene this week with their Viking-forged release Ynglingaättens Öde. Offering black metal elements intermixed with melodic interludes and acoustic overtures on guitar and violin, Ynglingaättens Öde creates a surprisingly entertaining and enthralling soundscape that will have you calling for blood in the name of Odin before you’ve even gotten to the third track. Not Viking metal in the abstract sense, but a fully transportative experience.
Monuments
In Stasis (Century Media)
Immediately settling into a state of controlled djent-chaos, Monuments‘ In Stasis demonstrates the band’s growth into the newfound stride present in more dynamic and heavier leanings. The subsequent line-up change for the prog metalcore quartet does not appear to have hindered their ability to dish out the anthemic emotions they are so well known for, with new frontman Andy Cizek’s diverse vocal styles only adding to the magic. Having incorporated a novel dimension of versatility to the band’s music, this album is likely to please both longtime dans and newcomers equally, though possibly for different reasons.
